We start early from Manali (6 – 7 am) and cross into Lahaul through the famous Atal Tunnel – the longest tunnel in the world above 10,000 ft. We follow the Chandra River Valley till we ascend to the mesmerising Kunzum Pass at 4,598 m (dividing Lahaul and Spiti). We spend some time taking in the fabulous views of the Chandrabhaga Mountain Ranges, visit the serene Buddhist shrine at Kunzum, and resume our journey to reach Kaza by evening. Though it’s a long journey (183 km, 8‑9 hrs), one hardly feels it as the changing landscapes en route keep one refreshed and captivated.

Today we head into the spectacular Pin Valley. We visit the Kungri Monastery and drive further to Mudh, the last village in Pin. From here we head to Tabo, famous for its monastery known as the ‘Ajanta of the Himalayas’ and over 1,000 years old. Spend the evening exploring Tabo. (115 km, 4‑5 hrs)

Today we head to Giu, the farthest village of Spiti near the Tibet border. Giu houses a rare relic of the human spirit – a Self‑Mummified Monk! Learn about the mummy and how it was discovered. From here we head to Dhankhar, the erstwhile capital of Spiti. A treasure of traditional architectural marvels, Dhankhar houses an ancient monastery (one of the 100 Most Endangered sites in the world) and remnants of Dhankhar Fort. If keen, trek to the pristine Dhankhar Lake (2‑3 hrs). Later we head to Demul Village, a beautiful settlement set on the highlands of Spiti and a model of sustainable living. Demul is well‑known for the purest arak (local brew) and its folk expressions*. Explore Demul, learn local delicacies with your homestay host or sign up for experiences* to sample Spiti life and culture. (123 km, 4‑5 hrs)

Today is a day of many highs! First, we head to Komic – the world’s highest village. Adventurers may trek or take a yak‑back safari* along scenic alpine meadows; alternatively, drive up and visit the monastery on arrival. Continue to Hikkim to send a postcard from the world’s highest post office, then visit picture‑perfect Langza with its famed Buddha statue and Cho Cho Khang Nilda peak backdrop. Langza is renowned for fossils and mud‑craft pottery – learn pottery* and make your own Spiti souvenir! Return to Kaza for the night; adventure lovers can mountain‑bike* down from Komic. In Kaza, drop into the Ecosphere office at Sol Café for insights into local initiatives and the best coffee in town. (53 km, 2‑3 hrs drive)

We start early for iconic Kee Monastery, beautifully perched on a conical hill – Spiti’s most photographed monastery. From here we head to Kibber and drive over Chicham Bridge – the highest bridge in Asia – before reaching one of the most picturesque lakes in the region, Chandratal (Lake of the Moon Goddess). En route we cross the spectacular Kunzum Pass again, visit its Buddhist shrine and spend the rest of the day at Chandratal. (95 km, 4‑5 hrs)

Today we start our journey to Manali. We drive along the beautiful valley of the Chandra River and cross into the Kullu Valley through the famous Atal Tunnel – the longest tunnel in the world. Arrive at Manali Government Bus Stand (111 km, 4‑5 hrs) by mid‑afternoon for onward travel.
